2008 Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival to Highlight
The French School of Composers
April 15, 2008
The Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival’s fifteenth annual series will occur June 14 – 29, 2008 and will feature the music of the French school of composers. During the Festival, musicians of international stature will perform at 19 concerts throughout southeastern Michigan.
Among the many great composers whose pieces the Festival will present, Artistic Director James Tocco has programmed remarkable works stretching from Franck, Saint-Saëns, and Fauré, to Debussy, Ravel, Milhaud and Poulenc. A special highlight will be two performances of the Quartet for the End of Time, a masterpiece by Olivier Messiaen.
Of particular note for 2008 is the appearance of four internationally renowned composers: John Harbison, Joan Tower, William Bolcom, and John Corigliano. Awards between them include Pulitzers, Oscars, Grammy’s and MacArthur prizes. Each of these artists has previously served as composer-in-residence at the Festival, and each will turn 70 in 2008. They will attend the Festival at various times and will all be present for a special birthday performance occurring on the evening of June 23.
Pianists Menahem Pressler and Edward Auer, violinist Nicholas Kendall, cellist Sara Sant’Ambrogio, clarinetist Anthony McGill, mezzo-soprano Joan Morris and soprano Rachel Gottlieb will all be appearing for the first time at the Festival. In addition to these newcomers, a number of performers including Jeremy Denk (piano), Ida Kavafian (violin), Joseph Silverstein (violin), Kim Kashkashian (viola), Paul Katz (cello) and Andrés Díaz (cello) are returning to perform for Detroit-area audiences.
Tickets for the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival will be available beginning May 1 and are available for individual concerts or on a subscription-series basis. Subscription prices range from $130 (five-concerts) to $165 (seven-concerts). Advance single tickets are $35 for Saturday night concerts and $32 for other concert times, and $10 for those aged 25 and under. For further information, call the Festival office at 248-559-2097. The Festival is sponsored by Kirk in the Hills, St. Hugo of the Hills, Temple Beth El, and Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings, and it is presented by Comerica Wealth & Institutional Management and GM-XM Satellite Radio, with major support from EDS.
